An eye-catching spectacle it was! I forgot to tell you about her voice. What is a koel in comparison! Her voice slithered like a golden strand. You wouldn’t be bored with it even if you heard it the whole day. —I heard her songs only at dance gatherings. But even if I think of them now, the sweetness and fineness of her voice resound in my mind. As she got older, what can I say about the ever-growing grace of her affection? Even as a child, she was close to everyone. This quality increased day by day.
However, it must be said that it was Pudumaippittan who gave a fresh impetus to the Tamil language, boldly investing his wide canvas with the spirit of rebellion, experimenting successfully with a variety of narrative styles, setting the tone that the short story was to follow. The modern movement, which stemmed from little literary magazines, has always configured itself as a parallel counterpoint to the popular magazines and their outputs. The serious writers associated with it never bothered to defy the ‘’other’; they just got on with their experiments in literature.
Of course the words ‘our grandmother’ were not there in the original.
