In past due 1877, Louis Cailletete in France and Raoul Pictet in Switzerland independently succeeded in liquefying oxygen, thereby proving a speculation set forth via Antoine Lavoisier approximately a hundred years prior. The topic of the 1977 Cryogenic Engineering convention "Cryogenics: A Century of Progress-A Chal lenge for the longer term" effectively honored this accomplishment via reviewing many of the noteworthy advances considering that point and outlining many advances nonetheless to come back. either Volumes 23 and 24 of this sequence offer a great account of the various contributions that have been awarded at this convention. The 1977 Cryogenic Engineering convention used to be effectively back held in Boulder, Colorado the place the 1st Cryogenic Engineering convention was once initiated 23 years in the past by means of the overdue Russell B. Scott, then leader of the Cryogenic Engineering Laboratory of the nationwide Bureau of criteria. The Cryogenic Engineering convention Board is very thankful to individuals of the nationwide Bureau of criteria and the college of Colorado for serving as hosts for this assembly of cryogenic experts from worldwide. The Cryogenic Engineering convention is back happy to have had the foreign Cryogenic fabrics convention co-host this biennial assembly for the second one time in succession. This joint attempt back has authorized an in-depth insurance of analysis on technical fabrics in parts presently receiving fundamental cognizance by way of the cryogenic engineering neighborhood. The complaints of the Inter nationwide Cryogenic fabrics convention could be released as quantity 24 of the Advances in Cryogenic Engineering.

SCMS superconducting dipole magnet system consists of the superconducting magnet and its cryostat, a helium liquefier and refrigerator/liquefier facility, helium storage dewars, the transfer line, power supply, and a complete system for magnet instrumentations and control. The magnet system has been designed [1-3] and built by Argonne National Laboratory.

Figure 4 shows cross sections of the alternative designs at the plane of the channel inlet, indicating the arrangement of structure and windings. Both designs have modular (subdivided) windings, with coils held in substructures which are stacked to form the complete winding. In both designs, the substructure and the superstructure (major structural members such as the girders) are of aluminum alloy. ) RING G IRDER OUTER SHELL WINDING MODULES I HALF- SHElLS) HELIUM CON TAINER WINDING REGIONS VACUUM - '-'- -- CORE TUBE OUTE R VACUUM WALL DETAIL OF MECHANICAL GI RD ER JOINT GIRDER ISOL ID PLATE ) ~ I RECT.

Analog voltages, obtained by scaling the coil dimensions such as the number of turns, the thickness of the conductor, and the radius of the curvature of a given layer, are used as input signals to the electronic servologic. 625 mm. 625 mm in thickness are used. During the winding of the coil saddle crossovers, hold-down fixtures are needed. The hold-down fixtures serve a dual purpose: first, the fixtures function to anchor each conductor winding as it is bent around the cylinder to form the saddle Fig.
