Economic resources are a basis for marital power, and wives often expect (and get) more decision-making power when they make substantial financial contributions to the marriage (Blumberg and Coleman, 1989). It is likely, therefore, that the decision-making power of wives has increased in recent decades. Observational research indicates that asymmetric power—when husbands have more influence than wives—is more common among dissatisfied than satisfied couples (Gottman, 1994, p. 57). , Scanzoni, 1978).

This widespread interest exists for several reasons. First, a large number of studies show that happily married people have better physical and mental health than do unhappily married people or single individuals (Burman and Margolin, 1992; Marks and Lambert, 1998; Schoenborn, 2004; Stack and Eshleman 1998, Williams, 2003). In addition to promoting adult well-being, high-quality marriages benefit society by providing positive home environments for children’s development and by discouraging delinquency and deviance among youth (Amato and Booth, 1997; 36 Stability and Change in Marital Quality 37 Laub, Nagin, and Sampson, 1998).

Census Bureau. Both are excellent sources of information on changes in the composition of the married population. These data sets, however, contain little information on psychological variables, such as attitudes toward marriage, or information on family processes, such as marital interaction. Another data source is the General Social Survey (GSS), which has been conducted by the National Opinion Research Center in most years since 1972. This data set contains several items that measure attitudes toward marriage and family life (such as attitudes toward racial intermarriage and nonmarital births), along with a single-item measure of marital happiness.
