As shown, cooling air is forced through a set of axial cooling passages arranged around the circumference of each mold cavity. This cooling air is used to remove the heat, which is supplied to the mold from the glass as it is transformed into a parison. Cooling air can be arranged to flow from the top down (as shown) or bottom up. In either case the airflow is modulated by on/off valves, which open and close cyclically during each successive parison forming cycle. The fraction of the cooling cycle that the valves are held open affects the overall temperature of the molds.

Two test result samples are summarized in this section. Figure 6 shows the test results on a customer’s machine, for an 8 section, single gob, 3 gob weight production. The target gob weights are 430gram, 450 gram, and 460gram respectively. 5gram gob weight discrepancy was observed. A fine tune step was performed. 6 gram of the set points. All gob weights were within the gob weight variation tolerance for this particular production. 75th Conference on Glass Problems · 33 Multi Gob Weight Production Figure 6.

The perimeter of the stone (Figure 5(e)) was composed of chromium and oxygen. SEM/EDX analysis of the stone revealed the combination of elements typical of iron chromite. The petrographic techniques were unable to show definitive results as to the composition. However, through the use of reference materials combined with an experienced microscopist the composition of the stone can be identified. The source of the chromite was likely a raw material contaminant. 75th Conference on Glass Problems · 17 Comparison of SEM/EDX Analysis to Petrographic Techniques (a) Photograph (b) Thin-section photograph (c) SEM Photomicrograph (d) EDX of Inner Core (e) EDX of Perimeter Crystals Figure 5.
