10. 3-5 Table I. Constituent Phases of 3Y-TZP Matrix In Situ Composites. Starting powders Heating temperature and time Constituent phases' 3Y-Zr02, BaCO,, y-Fe,O, 1300°C. 5Fe,03 in situ composites sintered at 1300°C for 2 h are shown in Fig. 2 (a) and (b), respectively. These two composites have almost the same matrix structure, that is, t-ZrO, with grain sizes ranging between 100 and 300 nm, but completely different dispersion phases. In Fig. 2(a), only BaFe,,O,, can be observed. BaFe,,O,, particles of 200-500 nm are homogeneously dispersed in the TZP matrix.

The proposed concept in this paper is applicable to various refractory eutectic systems. CONCLUSIONS A porous ZrO, (ss) with uniform unidirectional pores has been successfully fabricated via the Zr0,-MgO eutectic reaction followed by selective HCI etching. The pores were geometrically aligned in the porous ZrO,. Such a porous material will be very useful for the ultra high-temperature filter materials. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The authors gratefully acknowledge Dr. S. Kawakami at NIRIN for his assistance in preparing green bodies.
